Data in the database is stored in tables, which in turn contain fields that each contain a single piece of data. For example, patient information is stored in a table named "patient_data". The table in turn table  contains a field named "pid" that contains patient IDs. In the custom report generator, the table and field are displayed as patient_data.pid.
